Is Blog Advertising Working?
There is an article in Media Post’s Online Media Daily with highlights from an Ad:Tech panel on whether or not blog ads create buzz. Nick Denton claims that the buzz is not there on his blogs (not sure I would admit that if I were him since I would think he would appreciate the source of revenue). Other bloggers had better luck, but all agreed that there had to be a “fit” between the ad and the blog–that seems pretty obvious.

On a related note, this report by IntelliSeek finds that people are 50% more likely to trust word-of-mouth recommendations from peers than they are by tv/radio ads. This report is calling this new form of advertising “Consumer Generated Media” or CGM.

At the same time, a majority of blogs are so highly personalized that finding the right “fit” for advertising can prove quite difficult. Whenever I visit Wonkette (http://www.wonkette.com ), I’m confused about how the majority of the ads featured on the site actually pertain to the political content of the blog.
Anyway, I was sick today, but I hope you guys stuck it to the speaker. Or at least had some good conversation with him

Dan, Hope you are feeling better. We had a great conversation today with our guest speaker. On this topic, he mentioned that they are not making any money with their blog ads, and are even encountering some skepticism from advertisers about putting ads there. The latest from the Ad: Tech conference today is a discussion about allowing blog readers to actually comment on the blog ads– critiquing them and also getting the blogger to help create the ads. This could be an entirely new way of thinking about advertising for the ad world.
