How the BBC calls for citizen reporters

Filed under: Blogging, We the Media

As I was reading a BBC article on pirates off Somalia, I noticed an interesting addition to the story. At the end of the story is a call for comments, but not just “Comments” instead I read “Do you know of anyone who was on the ship? Send us your comments and experiences.”
Once at that link, I read several comments by relatives and friends of the passengers and crew. At then end of the comments (as of 4:30 Saturday) I read a report from someone claiming to be on the ship correcting the BBC reporter. By the time I read the story, Edith Laird’s comment had become part of the published story.

I also saw a call for pictures “Do you have any images? You can send them to yourpics@bbc.co.uk” I haven’t seen any pictures there as yet though.

As we read the News and Record site and prepare for John Robinson’s visit, can you find other examples of major trusted news sites using comments as ways to update and even correct their stories?
