Brits behind on blogging…

Filed under: Blogging, We the Media

Reuters reports today that Brits are not as familiar with blogging as we are. I’ll let you read the headline for yourself–it is a bit racy! A British ad exec asked people on the street about blogging and discovered that the industry knows more about it than the average person.

Do you think this is true here? Is this common sense to us, but not to our neighbors?

  1. I think that if you were to roam the streets of the U.S, it would be quite similar (minus the dogging thing.) This San Francisco Chronicle article says “An estimated 8 million Americans have blogs, according to a recent study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. A far greater number, 32 million, said in November that they had read a blog, up 58 percent from just 10 months earlier.” The point he is making is that the popularity is increasing as we speak. Every year blogging gets more popular.

He goes on to say, “People are clearly intrigued by the phenomenon, if not confused. Merriam- Webster, the dictionary, designated “blog” its word of the year for 2004 based on the number of people who looked up a definition of the term online.” So, yes, Americans are interested. Are they experts? No.

Also, think about these numbers. You think WHOA, 32 million Americans have read a blog. But granted, that is barely 10% of the population. So compared to the 70% of Brits that knew what a blog was, Americans aren’t that much farther ahead, if at all.
